The right to water is a basic human right, it is unarguably a necessity to our lives. Canada contains a full one fifth of the world’s freshwater which is fantastic. It does mean though that there is no reason for people to be deprived of freshwater in our country, and yet there are.
Shoal Lake No. 40 First Nation is a community of 553 people spanning across the Manitoba and Ontario borders.
Shoal Lake No. 40 (pinned) in relation to the city of Winnipeg
Over a hundred years ago construction on an aqueduct to send clean water to Winnipeg began and resulted in the reserve being cut of from the mainland. There is no permanent road to the community, requiring residents to use a ferry in the summer (here described as a aging barge) or ice roads in the winter. These winter roads are unreliable, every year resulting in people falling through the ice, sometimes dying.
This aqueduct continues to provide the city of Winnipeg with reliably clean drinking water, however the residents of Shoal Lake are left with dirty, undrinkable water. The community has been on a boil-water advisory for over seventeen years.
Saturday, September 12, 2015 a walk was held in Winnipeg to raise awareness for this issue and to support the proposed “Freedom Road”. Freedom Road is a proposed permanent all-weather road to be built from the Shoal Lake community allowing residents not only to be able to travel back and forth from home safely, but also for garbage to be removed to the mainland and making the hoped for water treatment plant a more affordable project. Freedom Road is a $30 million project and the city of Winnipeg and the province of Manitoba have both pledged to support the project in a three way split but the federal government has not yet agreed to support the project.
This project, this road, is a life and death situation for many people. Water is unarguably a human right and there are people in our country who do not have access to that right. This should not be a question, this should not be put on the back-burner, this should be dealt with. It’s time to bridge the murky water we have left Shoal Lake No. 40 in. It’s time for a Freedom Road.
It feels kinda weird this weekend. I have the whole weekend off! I mean Friday is my usual day off but during the summer my boss tries to get us each a couple weekends off in case we what go to the beach or something I guess so I got Friday, Saturday, and Sunday off this weekend!! I don’t know what to do with myself! Today I cleaned the bathroom, got mum to buy some magic erasers and scrubbed the bathtub! I’m so used to cleaning at work now, I guess I need a cleaning “fix” (Don’t get any ideas Mum!!)
Anywho, spent the rest of the day painting my nails, watching Dr Who and eating ice cream so not exactly a thrilling day off, but suits me down to a T!
Talk to you tomorrow!
Today I did something I’ve always kind of laughed at the idea of. I cleaned a wall and floor with a toothbrush.
It didn’t work very well. 2/10: Would not recommend. Wrecks your toothbrush…
I used muscles today that I forgotten I had…
I believe I’ve mentioned on here that I worked as a janitor for a while in high school, well today, I used the old skills once more!
I haven’t done any serious cleaning (like public building style cleaning) since I left my job as a janitor about two years ago, but this week at work is, like, massive spring cleaning time and today I spent an entire eight hour shift scrubbing five fitting rooms from top to bottom. Each room took almost an hour and a half! I mean this rooms are tiny! How the heck did they get so dirty!? I was practically able to peel a layer of grime of by hand! The thing is, before I started wiping them down, you couldn’t really tell, but then I got half way down one wall and I looked at it and you could see a stark difference between what I’d cleaned and what was yet to come. I was grey and then beige. Like two completely different colours, side-by-side, on the same wall… kind of disturbing.
However, they practically glow now and my hands are still slightly scented with lemon cleaner… *delicately sniffs hands*
(my boss told me if I got it all cleaned MAYBE they’d even let me go to The Ball!!)
So through that I used muscles hat have not been used in a while… I forgot how much up-and-down work is involved in cleaning! and lots of wrist movement too. My wrist is actually a bit sore which I find slightly pathetic but I found I really enjoyed it. Being alone and just cleaning (when I’m not at home MOM!) is something I find very relaxing, I think it’s the quiet and the repetitiveness of it. But then, it could also just be the cleaning supplies’ fumes so, who knows!
Talk to you tomorrow!
I’m not very good at doing laundry. Now that I’m an adult or something I have to do my own laundry, I don’t just leave it in the basement and find that it magically reappears clean I actually have to do the loading and uploading and folding and stuff. Now while I’ve found a bonus to this is my socks and tank tops don’t go missing anymore, I still haven’t nailed down a regular time to “do laundry”. I kind of end up realizing one day, Wait, I literally have no more clothes that I can wear to work. Crap. Guess I’d better do some laundry right now! and then half the time I end up finding some shirt I haven’t worn for like a year and that saves tomorrow so I end up putting off doing my laundry for another day.
However I don’t only find it easy to forget to have laundry day, I also forget I’m having one in the midst of having it! Sometimes I go down stairs and realize my laundry must have finished about two hours ago and my shirts are all cold and wrinkled so I put them in for ten more minutes and then forget them for another hour and the cycle continues until I wake up in a cold sweat at 2am and realize I never took my drying out! (just kidding, that’s never actually happened…)
But ya. Today was an impromtu laundry day because otherwise tomorrow would have ended up as a what-can-I find-in-my-closet-that-I-can-also-wear-to-work day. I kept forgetting my laundry like usual bit I wasn’t as bad as on some days! I’ve got it all done now!
I’m not sure why this is, like, I never hear the beep and I’ll comment and a family member will be all, Ya that beeped like an hour ago… and I’m all Well thanks! Could have been helpful knowledge to know an hour ago… But hey, maybe I’m deaf to beeping noises!
Talk toy ou tomorrow!
